Dealing with the Dog: Separation anxiety

Separation anxiety is a common issue that many dogs experience when left alone for extended periods of time. It can cause destructive behavior, excessive barking, and even physical harm to the dog. As a responsible pet owner, it is important to address this issue and find solutions to help your furry friend feel comfortable when you are not around.

One solution for separation anxiety is to gradually get your dog used to being alone. Start by leaving for short periods of time and gradually increase the amount of time you are away. You can also leave your dog with toys and treats to keep them occupied while you are gone. Another option is to hire a dog walker or pet sitter to check on your dog during the day.

I know Sylvester is a cat but if you haven't seen "Claws For Alarm" you have missed out. From IMDB: Porky Pig doesn't realize that the old hotel where he and Sylvester are spending the night is really part of a ghost town. It's only Sylvester who sees the band of murderous mice trying to do them in, while Porky chalks his fears up to insanity.

While Sylvester is actively trying to save Porky Pig, Porky dismisses his actions for being insane as the description says. We often dismiss our dog's fears and do not do enough to comfort them. Imagine being afraid until someone treated you right, would you let that person go? That is your dog's perspective. "I need to be with you always"

Another solution is to create a safe and comfortable space for your dog when you are not home. This can be a crate* or a designated area in your home that is secure and familiar to your dog. You can also leave items that have your scent, such as a blanket or shirt, to provide comfort to your dog.

*Order a dog crate cover, sleep on the cover for a week. Your scent will be on the cover and you can then cover the crate with it.

*Definitely consider using time occupying toys in the crate.

It is important to address separation anxiety as soon as possible to prevent further harm to your dog and your home. If your dog’s anxiety is severe, it may be necessary to consult with a veterinarian and a behavior specialist that works with just separation anxiety dogs.

In the Brilliant Paws training the stay and place commands are great time building exercises that you can build trust with your dog on. They are the toughest commands because your dog wants to be with you it is hard for them to be separated. Some dogs breeds like the German Shepherd were intentionally bred to be attached to their owners so literally the dog cannot change their DNA but they CAN cope. Teach your dog basic commands so you can work with a specialist to build on those trust exercises and discover new ways to help you and your dog.

Remember, every dog is unique and may require different solutions for separation anxiety. Be patient and persistent in finding what works best for your furry friend. With time and effort, your dog can learn to feel comfortable and secure when you are not around.

With my book, you will teach your puppy their name, sit, stay, down, place, heel and recall.
